What Makes a Church Healthy?

We had a meeting recently where our leadership was challenged to consider what a healthy church looks like. The traditional answer usually includes the ABC’s – Attendance, Building, Cash. But we were invited to consider a different answer.

A healthy church is one where every person is growing as a disciple – a follower of Jesus.

In other words, the health of the whole church depends on the health of each individual. Are people spending time with Jesus (alone and with others)? Is their character growing so they “look” more and more like Jesus. Are they focused on doing what Jesus did – serving others in love?

When we wonder about how healthy our church is, we might be tempted to look at quantifiable data. But a better indicator is simply to look in the mirror!
